Just about 20mins of work here to start a new piece. I lay down some acrylic wash and start carving into it with oil bars/oil pastels to find my abstraction and design. Sometimes it happens like magic, sometimes it's a wrestling match with color and form. Working and filming with 2 separate hands far too much, I need to create my old video making setup but the video discipline takes away from spontaneity kills the urge to produce art, otherwise i would be filming in show biz. My next phase is this wall assemblage of my cut-out cardboard shapes which are taking form! This step is giving me a wealth of ideas and image creation to expand my artwork similar to rough sketching of ideas but is also giving me a glimpse of how I can begin 3D assemblages that adhere to a flat surface to create paintings on or that can exist sculpturally on their own. Completing a solid year of doing studio work daily this past 2023 has returned me to the glory and discipline I had as an art student in college. I left the path of pursuing my fine art out of college to pursue a living and income for four decades or more in the illustration art and graphic design worlds. In the last few weeks, the realization of a year spent daily with color, form, design, and creation is priceless, the true key to freedom that can be accessed by all! I have come to the conclusion that the greatest source of food for the soul is color, form, and design as the building blocks of art-making. I am trying to devise a method to show more stages of my artmaking process. Since I work on several pieces at once, I can't complete an art piece as a whole video in one sitting. Let's see if this works by trying to splice stages of my progress together. This is exactly how I begin all my abstract work dive in and start carving with line, form, color, luminosity, and layered texture showing a patina of marking history. Obviously, I am struggling to get my type titles placed correctly. The app is cryptic at best. Basically, it's a trial and error process, and the Canva Pro app doesn't cut it either, I will keep pounding on these apps anyway. It's all about inane work arounds. Loving this new medium I just bought from R & F called "Blending Medium with Drier". Gives me extended life and added transparency when working with oil bars and oil pastels. Adds speed in blending, longer experimention time, plus it allows many thinned out glazed layers a la the Dutch masters. The transparency it creates is magical. The medium is comprised of linseed oil, natural waxes, and a drier. If your an oil bar fan you won't regret this, "a lil dab will do ya"...who knows what product used that as a by-line in their radio and TV AD'S a few decades ago? Both canvases in that previous #artreel 36" x 48". The first layer of coverage was in acrylic paint, which speeds up my surface coverage process. Now only using oil bars and oil pastels for the last 20% to 30% of finesse techniques to bring a piece to finish. Do not work acrylic over oil, but archivally you can apply oil over dried acrylic. I usually finish the piece with a cold wax archival coverage burnished to a matte sheen with a soft cotton t-shirt, or I will apply a coat of acrylic matte varnish once the painting has seasoned and dried. Two independent canvases in the works for a combined area of 72" x 48". I am not so far intending them to be one painting much more reduction and simplification needs to be done. The first layer of coverage was in acrylic paint, which speeds up my total coverage process I am finding out. I was disliking the growing sweat stain on the headband rim so I did a recreation today of this old drab sweaty hat that was a solid olive color. I used Liquitex spray paint and light fast Posca markers. Stay KOOL! I will hit this with a matte varnish to preserve it. A reworking of ICARUS which I started a few decades back, falling in the genre of #abstractrealism a multimedia piece inspired by Icarus's fateful journey to the sun. This painting #artonpaper apprx 4'.5" x 5'.5" an inspiration from my first introduction to "The Hydrogen Man" a woodcut print by the great printmaker/artist Leonard Baskin. I met "The Hydrogen Man" in a living room in Flatbush, Brooklyn my first stay-over ever in Brooklyn, NYC it was for the Passover celebration in the home of the most avid art collector I have ever met. He was my girlfriend's father at that time in my first year of an MFA program at UMass, the Dartmouth, MA campus. Once I finish this piece I will make an #artreel of this story of how I was exposed and transformed by this unique exposure to several of Baskin's great printworks.
